What is copywriting? Why is it important to my business’s success? I get asked these questions a lot. Before I started my career, I had no idea either. You would be surprised at the number of copywriters I’ve spoken with who, when they discovered copywriting is “a thing”, had a lightbulb go off. Many of us practically stumble into it!
So, it makes sense that this key piece to a successful business strategy takes a little bit of explanation. It’s an easy skill to start learning, but a hard one to master. Just know that great copywriting can help your business in many ways. To start, here are five things great copywriting can help you accomplish – my take on The Five C’s.
1 // Communicate
Everyone can write, but not everyone is a writer! It takes planning, editing, and thick skin to effectively communicate what you want to say. All that means is you need to take your time, think about it, and be sure to get it right. It likely won’t be on your first go. Editing is important.
2 // Connect
A good copywriter understands your business’s target market. Without insight into with whom you’re speaking, you could just be screaming into the void! Writing and conversation feel like they should be interchangeable but writing conversationally while connecting with your audience can be a difficult skill to learn. A good example – take a look at the second sentence in this paragraph. It’s written properly, but do you know anyone that talks like that?!
3 // Catch Eyes
Stand out. Be unique. Platforms are overrun with brands; everyone has something to say. Will people remember you? This is when building a unique brand voice becomes imperative to the way you write.
4 // Convert
There’s a psychology behind every word placed on a page. Sometimes it’s by accident. Most of the time, a good writer places those words there intentionally. Knowing how to pick the right words can be the difference maker in getting your target to take action.
5 /// Credibility
A consistent voice and thought-out cadence help build trust between your brand and potential customers. Communicating, connecting, catching eyes, and converting are a foundation for solid credibility in your industry.
